the resemblance to marking rollers and a massage tool seem apt. tools for the cosmetic marking of the body (henna?) for fashion, occupation, cultural status, any of the reasons that we still mark our bodies. would also account for the lack of artifacts retaining these marks. weren't the Thai people comfortable with nudity in the past? but to go without style doesn't seem human.

I'm 100% sure that they are food processing tools. Those were used by ancient peoples in a sort of curved bowl to dehusk rice, make flour from corn and etc. In ancient times, it was all about the food, if they had food rich and if not, poor. Since these were found with children, it would seem these were the equivalent of our Play-Do toys. Running a dowel through the holes allowed children to create patterns in the sand, mud, or possibly onto a paper surface. I suppose children could become experts at creating images by combining the patterns created by these rollers.

I think they were used by children to make stamped pictures or designs in clay, or on clay pots. The children could have been helping their moms decorate clay pots before they were fired in the kiln.

These are something like rolling pins that potters would use to make designs on their pottery before firing it. It could also be by any one wanting to create designs on anything that was made of a softer material. It would be used kinds like a stamping process. It was a way to mass produce designs without having to spend countless and painstaking ours applying detail.

kassy

Thursday, October 26, 2006
They are noise makers. A dowel fits through both ends of each spools loose enough for the spool to spin. An arm's length of string is then wrapped around the spool. The spool is pressed against a glass window pane, a strong pull on the string results in a loud chattering sound from the notches on the spool. This can also be done with on a door.
